It’s been since March 2014 since I wrote an article for Voiceover Xtra. Back then, I found great success in voiceover from in-person networking. I encouraged voiceover talent to go out and meet clients in what’s now called IRL, or in real life.
Now I’m back, wondering how we as voiceover talent survive a world whose landscape has changed so drastically. It’s a world where technology threatens to upend everything we have built, our businesses, our understanding, and even the relationships we networked for. It’s a world where rapid change is so normalized that displacement is glossed over and the displaced aren’t given a second thought. We’ve become so enesticized to change that those who defy it, go unheard.
That’s left me to wonder if whether or not the argument that we in the voiceover community make about people rejecting robotic voices is true. No, AI voiceovers will never have a soul, but for an audience who has been inundated with AI slop on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, does that even matter? Are they actively listening? Do they notice? Do they care? Or have the robots convinced them that this is the new normal, flat and emotionless?
In my latest article in Voiceover Xtra, I share my thoughts in greater depth. Check it out.
